While many may find it daunting to shoot and get stares in the streets, I actually enjoy it. Street photography has grown my confidence as a photographer and person in general. I am no longer scared to pull out my phone or camera and quickly take a photo of something I find interesting. Whether it’s people, buildings, a beautiful sunset or a fancy car ; if I like it, I’ll take a photo.
With street photography, I have learnt to travel light in terms of gear and work with what I have in the moment. In busy streets like the ones in Nairobi, you also learn to be quick while shooting. One or two takes are adequate to avoid attracting a lot of attention.
I would say street photography is a hit or miss. Sometimes you get the perfect shot at the right time; other days the shots are blurry or the lighting just doesn’t work. Like any other skill, the only way to be good at it is practice, which means shooting more.
